Human Rights Day at the Market 2024

This year’s theme was Diversity Makes our Community Stronger.

We highlighted several community organizations that enhance diversity, as well as programs and offices at the University of Idaho.

Celebrating Programs that Celebrate Us.

Our inclusive community is strengthened by Moscow’s diverse cultural events, food, music, organizations, faiths, and more.

CRUISE THE WORLD – An annual public event held at the UI Pitman Center, which spotlights world cultures, with information booths, food, and entertainment. Put on by UI international students and sponsored by the UI International Programs Office.

FESTIVAL DANCE & PERFORMING ARTS – A non-profit arts organization that sponsors performance events from around the world as well as provides free outreach programs for thousands of area students by professional artists from diverse cultures.

JUNETEENTH CELEBRATION – Held in Friendship Square, with music, food, children’s activities, and guest speakers celebrating emancipation from slavery, freedom, and unity. Organized by the Moscow Human Rights Commission and the UI Black and African/American Cultural Center.

MOSCOW SISTER CITY ASSOCIATION – Provides scholarships and assistance for Moscow’s Sister City, Villa El Carmen, Nicaragua. Sponsors exchange programs that provide residencies for Nicaraguan teachers who provide enrichment and education for our students and community.

DISABILITY ACTION CENTER – Works to promote the independence and equality of all individuals with disabilities in all aspects of society.  Activities include personal and community advocacy, independent living skills training, information and referral, and more.

INLAND OASIS – A support organization for the LGBTQ+ community that provides education, social and health programming including the West Side Food Pantry, a community center, an emergency fund for those in immediate need and events open to the community, such as Pride in the Park.

TUTXINMEPU POWWOW  – An exciting and enriching event of drumming, dancing and ceremonies honoring the culture and heritage of area tribes including the Nez Perce and Coeur d’Alene. Sponsored by UI Native American Student Center.

Each of us have identities that are multifaceted and complex. We all benefit by being in relationship with each other and learning from one another.   In our community, the University of Idaho is committed to creating an inclusive climate of mutual respect and understanding. Here are some of the programs and offices at the University of Idaho:

Unfortunately, there is a national movement to eliminate diversity programs. The Idaho Legislature considered just such a bill last year and it’s likely we will see it again this year. If passed, it could eliminate valuable programs offered by the University of Idaho.

Included and specifically named in last year’s bill were:The Office of Equity and Diversity at UI
The Black and African American Cultural Center at UI
The LGBTQA Office at UI
The Office of Multicultural Affairs at UI
The Women’s Center at UI
